Painted Maypole has succumbed to peer pressure.

Painted Maypole finally joined facebook. Because she has all this extra time to kill (cough, cough).

Painted Maypole is trying to resist looking at the long lists of friends of friends to find people she also knows.

Painted Maypole has received requests from people whom she could swear she has never met, but apparently we have friends in common. Painted Maypole doesn't quite know how to handle this. (what is the internet etiquette there?)

Painted Maypole is now "friends" with people she had only a passing aquaintance with in college. Twelve years ago. She's not sure she cares what they are doing now, frankly. Unless they can get her a paid acting gig.

Painted Maypole plans to keep her blogging and facebooking separate, since she blogs anonymously, and so although she truly does consider you all to actually BE her FRIENDS, she is politely declining all of your kind offers to "friend" her on facebook. At least for the time being.

Haha! I know! I felt the same way when I joined. But I also learned to just accept the friendships because most people never actually write anything to me. For some silly reason they just want another person they new way back when on their friend list. A little strange, isn't it?

I have a lot of those fringe friends, too. I am always curious about them enough to accept, then I delete them a few days later, hoping they won't notice. Although I refused someone once who I did not recognize and who did not use her maiden name, only to realize later it was someone I really wanted to be back in touch with. You never know.

The hardest part is that most of us bloggers use screen names, and then facebook uses real names, so it's hard to know who people really are!

But I'll be your friend if you'll be mine! hehe

Dawn Gentz (but I won't be offended if you don't wanna! lol)

What Pgoodness said. I figure a lot of the people in the 'You may know' column are bloggers I do know, but I don't know their names. Mine is Gilmour, and if I pop up in your column I would be glad to be your Friend.
What I enjoy most about Facebook are the zany comments people put in the 'What are you doing now' box. Hugely funny.

I can relate. Most of them will drop off after the initial spate of friending. ;-)

My friends had me open a myspace account after I got seperated.

I am lame.

I don't friend people I don't know in some form or fashion. I just don't get that. I have accepted requests from people that I haven't spoken to since 6th grade, though, and it's weird seeing their conversations with other people I haven't known since 6th grade pop up in my feed. Maybe I'll do like Chrissy said and silently delete them.

Trust me, it's weird when they mix. I totally understand your decision. My HS reunion was this fall and I had to do a LOT of explaining that "Greeblemonkey" was not my married name! ;)

I mainly use facebook to play scrabble online with my sister. I only have real friends on it too, and honestly? Not that many of them. I guess I'm a lame facebook-er!

Good for you, for declining, that is. It's all a little bit much at times, isn't it?

Okay, random things to tell you in the middle of the night: I found out on Facebook if you don't want to delete someone, but are sick of hearing about them going to the grocery store every five minutes, you can click 'Options' and 'less about', and you won't see their status any more.

Also, totally random, was the book you were reading a while back 'The Horse Whisperer'? Because I got halfway through that book and said to myself, OH NO! Maypole was talking about this! and then I proceeded to yell at the book every time it got worse and worse. And what was with the ending, it was like the author just got tired of writing and decided to cut it off. If that wasn't the book you read, never mind all of this babble.

Facebook can be a strange thing. Although I do enjoy using it. I have tons of free time too (cough cough)

I like getting friend requests from odd souls I went to high school and college with - it is my sincere hope that I shake them up a teensy bit...

I'm not a blogger in real life, but most of my Facebook friends are blog friends. I never mention blogging, though, just in case!

Be careful ~ facebook is addicting! :) I have a good mix of friends... old h.s. friends, work buddies, neighbors, family members and people I met through blogging. It's fun and I spend waaaaay too much time on there!

I keep getting friend suggestions from people in high school-- THEIR friends they've met as adults-- why would I need their friends? AND the freakiest thing is one guy (from high school) who apparently had a thing for me then, keeps sending me those "J wants to kidnap you to..." requests. Dude, kidnap your wife and leave me alone.
Sorry to ramble, you hit a nerve I guess :-)

If you ever change your mind, let me know. I am on Facebook with my real name and I refuse to come out of the blogging closet there. We could be closet blogger friends.
