And she's off to school!

The May Queen was excited to put on her uniform this morning (cute, huh?) and even TIED HER OWN SHOES (I just taught her how to do this yesterday. The fact that she is nearly 6, entering first grade and didn't know how to tie her shoes is clearly all the fault of whoever invented Velcro, and not at all due to any lazy parenting on my part). The bag is the only thing that didn't have to follow strict uniform codes (did you notice that even the SOCKS are monogrammed? sigh) so I decided to spoil her with some of her favorite princesses. She was thrilled.

As I suspected she did just fine once at school, and was even ready to say goodbye to me just inside the front doors. I walked her to her room, but then left pretty quickly. She wasn't particularly talkative about the day (her favorite response to our questions was "I forget"), but what we did hear was good, and another little boy was calling goodbye to her as she got in the car.

We came home and kept up the tradition of the first day of school cake.

(and for those of you wondering about school starting so early - the reason school starts so early here is because they want to be done before Memorial Day. WHY they want to be done before Memorial Day is a complete mystery, but that seems to be how they do it in the south. My husband thinks it's because they like to start in August and pay the highest air conditioning bills possible!)

Oh, wow. What a grown-up girl! She looks very cute in the uniform.

I'm glad she had a good day. And I love your tradition of a first day of school cake!

Oh, she is adorable, and I love the red bow. In Texas they just changed our start date to the end of August in order to save $ on air conditioning, but it sucks because now we have to go until mid-June when the weather is actually decent.

Anyway, I'm glad she's enjoying 1st grade. Go MQ.

She is lovely, the picture of happiness, and is clearly deeply loved. The cake is a great design! Sweet idea.

She's a cutie! What is it about plaid that looks so cute on little girls, but so crappy on grown-ups? Except men wearing kilts, that is. :)

And yeah, in Texas, we now start the last week of August. Kind of sucky, but it worked for our vacation this year.

Your little Maypole is darling in her uniform. Love your cake tradition! So glad everything seems to be going so well.

*Very* cute uniform. I think the monogrammed socks might be a bit much, though. (and this from a girl who loves socks!)

What a beautiful girl she is...

At least the uniform is a cute one. I bet all the girls look so cute together (but not as cute as the MQ). I love your first day of school cake tradition. It looks yummy! I hope she has a wonderful year.

I love that uniform; she looks totally adorable. I hated uniforms for the whole 12 years I had to wear them, but I would have liked that one. I suspect my 29 year old writer/human rights lawyer doesn't know how to tie her shoes.

She looks great.. and, yes, I was wondering why school starts so soon. When I was a kid, it was September to June.

I like the custom of the cake. :)

(I will send you an offlist message to explain merit. :)

She is so adorable!! How is it possible to look so cute in a uniform I'll never know. So cute!!!

The cake idea? Brilliant. I may just have to steal your idea and start that tradition in my family too. :)

Beautiful uniform and cake. I'm kinda wishing my kids wore uniforms. It would level the playing field, wouldn't it?

Look how pretty she is in her uniform!

We start early, too, and are done the 3rd week of May.

First of all, what a wonderful smile the May Queen has.

It's not just a southern tradition - it's the same in Indiana and New Mexico. Some of my friends have already been teaching a week or two. Seems nuts to me. We're in the opposite phase in Michigan - we're now ALL starting the day after Labor Day so that we'll be encouraged to elongate the tourist season and give big bucks to tourism enterprises in MI. (Yeah, sure, with the highest unemployment rate in the country - NO problem).

Love it. She is SO adorable. And you are such a cool mom.

We're in the south too but I actually would like it if they would get out in May 1st and start back August 1st. August is way to hot to actually enjoy summer. Might as well be sitting in school.
