Wink, wink, nudge, nudge

I am a winker.

An e-mail I send to a friend may have more winks in it than a vice presidential debate*. ;) I try not to wink in my blog posts, but do sometimes have to go back and edit them out (the wink in this post is, of course, intentional). I find them sneaking into the comments I leave around the blogosphere. I worry that they may be too "cute" and sometimes delete them. But I find myself leaving them in more and more.

I wink in real life, too. I might wink at a friend across a crowded room. I might wink at someone I'm rehearsing with. It's a sort of "hello" or "well done" or "I hear you." I wink at The May Queen all the time. Sometimes she winks back.

A few weeks ago I took in a cookie cake to celebrate with her class at school. The children were lining up at the door to go outside when I arrived, so I stood in the hallway grinning at The May Queen.

She looked at me, grinned, and WINKED. All on her own.

I winked back.

It was like she recognized that it's a way we communicate: a quick andsilent way to say "I'm here," "I love you," and "Isn't this fun?"

*Although I am a wink-a-holic, I would never, ever wink at a director at an audition, or into the camera at a commercial or film audition. Never. Likewise I think it's a little creepy that a vice-presidential candidate would wink at ME during a debate. I'm just saying.

And... wink, wink, nudge, nudge... don't forget Monday's Mission: write a post in the style of campaign coverage! (and yes, it's fair to do campaign coverage along the lines of The Daily Show or SNL)

If you're not familiar with the wink, wink, nudge, nudge Monty Python sketch you really should take 2 minutes and 11 seconds of your time and watch it.

Totally ditto. I am a major winker, but there are times and places!

Such a cutie, that MQ. I love that she winked at you on her own!

I have a weird compulsion as far as winking goes...but it's not what you might think. When I'm reading, and I come across the word "wink"....I have to wink. I have to. I've been that way as long as I can remember.

And do you remember the crocodile song? With the "the croc winked his eye" line, when I always winked? That wasn't an accident. I have to wink when I say it too.

I am a complex person.

Or perhaps just a bit nutty.

;)

Thank you very, very much for pointing me over to that Monty Python sketch, I had totally forgotten about it.
And now you got me thinking about winking. Which I never do. Weird.

It's better to be a winker than a wanker...

Say no more, say no more.

I wink a lot too (in real life and in the blogosphere). It is great that she can wink. My 7 year old has been trying to get the hang of it and he can't yet.

I am glad to hear your costume came in on time and your show went well.

I am not so much a real life winker. But, oh, on The Internets, it's a whole new me. ;) ;) ;)

I do think winking in real life is pretty darn cute. Not what I'd like to see in my VP (leave the cute at home, please) but I'll take a winking friend or a winking 7 year old any day.

I'm going to go against the grain and say I'll take a wink any time, any place, from any one.

Much better than a smirk.

;-)

You're winking doll is a cutie!

I cannot wink gracefully in real life, so I leave tons of them in comments when I can, and when it's called for, of course! ;)

See???? Just like that!

And look at her, already a pro winker!

I love winking. And the first time Chic (almost 7) winked at me on her own, I felt just like you. She's now QUITE proficient and winks with both eyes. Chicket (4) is just now mastering the other eye and occasionally winks on her own.

So gratifying! The May Queen has an adorable wink!

what a fun thing to learn about you. It's cool the MQ has developed a secret little language with you :-) (that was a smile, I wink too but now I'm feeling a little self conscious) ;-)

I don't know - now that you bring it up - that I've ever winked. Huh, that's kind of weird, now that I think about it....

That is the cutest story.

I like to leave winks in comments, too, but I often wonder about the cutesy thing. When I started blogging I never left LOLs or emoticons...but I've loosened up a bit.
