Weeping Angel

What is the angel doing? she asked.

The question seemed to come out of nowhere, but then I realized she was looking at the print my aunt and uncle had just sent us. It's a photograph of an angel statue... a statue I tried to show them in a recent cemetery tour, but the tomb had been locked. They must have found it in their time in NOLA, and later mailed it to us as a thank you gift.

What is the angel doing?

She's crying.

Why?

Well... the statue is over a tomb, and I imagine the sculptor made the angel crying as if the angel was sad that the person had died.

Pause.

But that doesn't make sense to me. I don't think an angel would cry. I think an angel would rejoice because when someone dies they go to heaven to be with God and the angels. Right?

Like how Grandma and Grandpa might die soon. Because they're not doing so well.

Pause.

Yes. We may cry, because we're sad and we miss that person here on earth, but I think that the angels rejoice.

beautiful post and beautiful pictures. What a tender monument. I think the angels might shed a few tears. Separations of any kind are hard.

Wow. What an amazing statue. Do they sell prints of it?

(And MQ does have a point. Smart kid.)

The clarity of a child's mind before all the shibboleths creep in! I think your daughter is marvellous. And so are you. Well handled.

That's really beautiful PM. I could sit and stare at that sculpture all day-- it really speaks volumes, doesn't it?
However, in my blog feed when I saw the title of this post, all I could think of was some scary evil angels on Dr. Who.
Your post was SUCH a relief :-)

Beautiful picture. Almost, y'know, unearthly the way the light hits the stone...

Jesus wept.

Perhaps, it is for our pain, those left behind, and not the one who has passed on to a new life.

That is really gorgeous!

I don't think the angel would mourn for the person who died, but perhaps weep alongside those who miss the person so.

That's beautiful.
I think we can have hope as Christians and still be utterly heart-broken as people. It's hard.

I've been thinking of you lately, of how your in-laws are doing. This must be such a difficult time.

MQ is a SMART girl. I think the angel would rejoice too. Still, beautiful statue. :)

So impressed with her thinking through, reasoning through, loss and the emotions -- complicated emotions -- involved. I can barely think rationally about loss, let alone reason through it.

I've always thought she was mourning with those who mourn...

And the photo I bought in NOLA was the very first thing I put on the wall in my new house. She's so pretty...

I remember that day in 2007. It was fun taking pictures of MQ. :)
